At Giunti Odeon, the splendid docufilm dedicated to one of the greatest masters of 20th century art. Like an on-the-road trip, the film explores the enigmatic personality of Andy Warhol (1928-1987), investigating his family ties and the roots that shaped one of the 20th century's most iconic artists. Often asked about his origins, Warhol replied with a now-famous phrase: “I come from nothing”. His parents, Ondrej Warhola (who anglicised his surname upon his arrival in the United States) and Júlia Justína Zavacká, emigrated from what is now Slovakia during a period of intense migration to America. The documentary starts from these roots to reveal previously unseen aspects of the artist's life, interweaving his family background with his extraordinary career. Through intimate interviews and personal material, the film takes viewers on an emotional and spiritual journey, exploring Warhol's origins and the legendary years of the Factory in New York. The narrative offers a new perspective on the artist, revealing lesser-known details that will capture the attention not only of Warhol's admirers, but also of a wider audience.
A significant part of the documentary was filmed in Warhol's parents' home village, where Byzantine Christianity was deeply rooted. Faith and religion, central themes in the artist's life, are intertwined with his art, showing the introverted and melancholic side of a man who transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary. The film visits symbolic places such as Warhol's birthplace in Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Tech University where he studied and his first home in New York. Other crucial places in his life are also documented, such as the place where he was the victim of an assassination attempt, the hospital of his sudden death and his burial place in Pittisburgh. Enriching the narrative of Andy Warhol. American Dream are contributions from his nephews Donald Warhola, Vice President of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and James Warhola, illustrator and artist. With never-before-seen material and new perspectives, the docu-film sheds light on Warhol's complexity, revealing his most intimate side and the profound impact his work had on contemporary culture. Andy Warhol. American Dream was made with the support of the Warhol family, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Andy Warhol Museum in Medzilaborce (Slovakia), the Slovak National Gallery, the Prague City Gallery and the Andy Warhol Foundation.
