The Book:

Florence, Carnival, 1794. At the Teatro della Pergola, the first act of Le feste d’Iside is underway when a piercing scream disrupts the audience. Countess Ludovica di Corvino claims to have witnessed a woman’s beheading beneath an archway onstage. The case draws the attention of Vitale Federici, a perceptive tutor, and his young apprentice, Bernardo della Vipera, who have been viewing the show from the grand duke’s balcony. Yet in the theatrical world, the line between reality and illusion becomes blurred, leaving Federici to wonder if he has entered a mysterious play within a play.

 

The Author:

Marcello Simoni, a former archaeologist with a degree in Literature, now works as a librarian and is an acclaimed historical novelist. His debut novel, Il mercante di libri maledetti (2011), won the prestigious Premio Bancarella. Known for his in-depth historical knowledge and suspenseful storytelling, Simoni has authored numerous works, including La biblioteca perduta dell’alchimista (2012) and Il labirinto ai confini del mondo (2013). His recent publications include La taverna degli assassini (2023), Morte nel chiostro (2024), and L’enigma del cabalista (2024). His work is celebrated for weaving history and mystery into gripping narratives.
